Folklore Sf "Volkstümliches (in Kleidung, Musik usw.)" std. (19. Jh.) Entlehnung. Entlehnt aus ne. folklore, eigentlich "Volkskunde". Das Wort wurde 1846 von W. J. Thomas als zusammenfassende Bezeichnung für die Volksüberlieferungen gebildet. Der erste Bestandteil, ne. folk, ist verwandt mit nhd. Volk, der zweite, ne. lore, mit njd. Lehre. Nachträglich wurde die Bedeutung ausgeweitet und steht heute im Deutschen als Bezeichnung für touristische und merkantile Bemühungen im Gegensatz zu der wissenschaftlichen Volkskunde.
